Bangor is a city in Gwynedd, north west Wales, and one of the smallest cities in the United Kingdom. It is a university city with a population in excess of 13,000 at the
2001 census, not including around 10,000 students at Bangor University. Including nearby Menai Bridge on Anglesey, which does not however form part of the City of Bangor
itself, the population is about 18,000.
Bangor is one of only five places classed as a city in Wales, although it is only the 36th largest urban area by population. According to the census, 46.6% of the
population speak Welsh. Bangor has been called “The Athens of Wales”.
